Is Test Prep an Evil Necessity?

exam-standardized-test-prepIs PSAT/SAT/ACT, SAT Subject Tests or HSPT, ISEE, ERB, SSAT preparation really necessary for today’s high school and middle school students? YES!  Why has test preparation become so important?  Most students are receiving some form of test preparation before they take these very important tests. It is my belief  that it is also necessary to provide not just test preparation, but to provide an education. Review of not only methodology but also math, reading comprehension, and writing skills that students can use in other classes in school is critical.

Do you want your child to be the only one not receiving extra help? Recent reports in the news have indicated that students’ general scores are declining.  Test preparation makes a huge difference.  Students also need to learn to control test taking anxiety, to eat properly and to manage their time.

The PSAT/NMSQT can be taken as early as freshman year, but only “counts” junior year.  It is given in October every year and is offered on Wednesday and Saturday. Registration for the PSAT is done directly through the child’s school. The ACT and the SAT are given numerous times throughout the year and registration is done on line on the different websites.  The SAT is a theoretical test while the ACT is more concrete.  The test is approached differently and preparing for one test does not mean that the child is adequately prepared for the other.  Speak to a test prep professional to find out which test is better for your child.

ISEE, SSAT, HSPT, ERB are all tests that students take in middle school for entrance into private or parochial high schools.  The school determines which test the student should take.

Can students raise scores on these tests? Absolutely!
